Summer is about to be in full force – meaning there are bound to be one or more food-oriented parties in your future. Whether they’re graduations or cookouts, if you’re following a plant-based diet or just trying to eat a healthy, you probably have the desire to switch up the standard summer vegan-friendly menu of fruit-salad, veggie plates, and store-bought veggie burgers. Luckily, we’ve got other options.
If you’re cooking in for the night, hosting an event of your own, or attending a pot-luck style cookout, impress the masses (and yourself) by whipping up these simple, spicy burgers.
For this recipe, we’ve partnered again with our foodie friends over at FeedFeed and Best Foods. To round out this protein-packed mixture, we topped off our burgers with Hellmann’s Carefully Crafted dressing and sandwich spread – the perfect cool-down compliment for the spiciness of the patties and the heat of summer.
This recipe is simple and quick, without too much prep work. Most of the ingredients you’ve probably got on hand. Just add them to your food processor, pulse until blended, form and cook the patties, and you’re ready to plate. They’re protein and fiber dense, so you can feel guilt-free knowing that you’re eating a wholesome and filling dish.
The distinguishing part about these burgers are the sunflower seeds, as they had an awesome textural element that separates these burgers from the norm. The spread makes the dish, helping to hold together the patties once you’ve taken your first bite.
Once you’ve got the patties made, lace them with some Carefully Crafted spread and whatever toppings you have on hand. We used lettuce, avocado, and micro-greens this time, but tomato and onion could be used for a more typical burger feel. These could also go great wrapped in a lettuce wedge or collard leaf, or even plain if you want to go sans-bun.
Usually for a spicy burger like this, I need ketchup to balance out the flavor palate, but the tomato-y taste can be overpowering. - 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3/4 cup brown rice cooked
- 3/4 cup red lentils cooked
- 1/2 cup panko bread
- 1/2 cup sunflower seed kernels
- 1/2 red onion chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 2 teaspoons red chili pepper flakes
- Salt to taste

- Lettuce leaves
- Pickled jalapeno peppers
- Avocado slices
Pulse all the ingredients in the food processor a few times until more or less uniformly mixed. Don't overdo it though, leave some texture.
Taste and adjust the salt.
Shape into patties and cook both sides in a pan until a golden-brown crust develops.
